Course record falls to United Airlines NYC Half

On a hot sunny day in New York, Ethiopia Senbéré Teferi beat Kenya Irene Cheptai to win the United Airlines NYC Half Marathon in a new course record of 1:07:35, beating Molly Huddle 2016 record of 1:07:41. best finisher in Canada, Natacha Wodack, finished 7th in 1:10:01, 28 seconds off the Canadian record.

The women’s race

Teferi and Cheptai broke away from the pack early, making it a two-man race for much of the morning. Teferi started trying to escape by entering Central Park, but Cheptai was right on her heels, challenging her to the finish line. In the end, Teferi edged out Cheptai to beat her at the line by two seconds, with Cheptai finishing second in 1:07:37, also under Huddle’s previous record.

Norway Karoline Bjerkeli Grovdal completed the podium in third place in 1:08:07. Wodak was Canada’s top finisher, running 1:10:21 to finish 7th, under 30 seconds by Andrea Seccafien record of 1:09:38. Seccafien herself finished not far behind Wodak in 1:11:33. Kate Bazely of St. John’s, NB also ran well in the Big Apple, finishing in 1:16:10.

The men’s race

It was a close three-way race for the men, between two Kenyan athletes, Rhônex Kipruto and former NCAA Phenomenon Edward Cheserek and Ethiopia Teshome Mekonen. Kipruto eventually edged his compatriot for the win, breaking the tape in 1:00:30, just seven seconds ahead of Cheserek, who finished second in 1:00:37. Not far behind was Mekonen, who completed the podium in 1:00:40.

Rory Linkletter, who recently broke the Canadian record for the half marathon in Houston (1:01:08) was Canada’s top runner-up in the men’s race, crossing the finish line in 10th place in 1:02:19.

The wheelchair

Manuela Schar, third place in the New York Marathon, and Daniel Romanchuk were the winners of the women’s and men’s wheelchair division. Schär broke the record in 56:12, more than five minutes clear of second place Yen Hoang, who finished in 1:01:3. Tatiana McFadden finished third in 1:05:45.

Romanchuk, who also finished third in the marathon last November, won the men’s race in 49:22, four minutes ahead of second. Hermin Garic in 53:24. spain Raphael Botello finished third in 54:16.
