Mayor Lori Lightfoot called it “a dark day in America.” Governor JB Pritzker has called for a special session of the General Assembly for reproductive rights. Illinois has, as of 2019, a law in place to maintain the legality of abortion even though Roe v. Wade was canceled.
US Senator Dick Durbin said the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing – scheduled for July 12 – on the “grim reality” of post-Roe America. US Representative Marie Newman shared her own abortion experience. The few Republican representatives in the state celebrated the decision. US Representative Mike Quigley went live to the Supreme Court to remind viewers to stay active to protect other rights.

Governor JB Pritzker
Let’s be clear: even with the Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe v. Wade, abortion is still safe and legal in Illinois.
It is a direct attack on self-determination and the right to privacy. But we cannot allow the radical right to take away our power.
The fight goes on.

US Senators from Illinois Dick Durban and Tammy Duckworth
Today’s decision eliminates a federally protected constitutional right that has been law for nearly half a century. As a result, millions of Americans are waking up to a country where they have fewer rights than their parents and grandparents. https://t.co/zA3WkEusiC

I’m outraged and horrified – this result is a nightmare that denies women their right to make their own choices about their health care and their bodies, and it paves the way for a nationwide abortion ban that Republicans have been calling for ever since. decades. https://t.co/7lX4gVfSIn

U.S. Representatives from Illinois
A joyous victory for Life! Roe’s end is the beginning of a new chapter, where we embrace a culture of living with a reverence for God’s children. This is a historic and incredible day for life and unborn children in America, a day that all of us in the pro-life movement have prayed and worked for. The Supreme Court was quite right to overturn previous abortion decisions made wrongly. pic.twitter.com/vh1ciN6NmT

I am outraged by SCOTUS’ decision to overturn women’s most fundamental right to control their own bodies, health and future.

The extremists on the ground want to roll back the clock and deprive Americans of their basic personal rights. We cannot let them succeed. https://t.co/1KVgCLxGdT

If I hadn’t had access to safe and legal abortion when I was 19, I wouldn’t be in Congress today.

By knocking down #DeerSCOTUS rolled back women’s rights by denying them autonomy over their own bodies.

Today’s SCOTUS ruling isn’t just about access to abortion care – it’s an attack on a person’s right to control their own life, body and future, and we should all be furious. The Senate must act NOW to codify access to abortion care.

Abortion is health care. I am outraged by the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down a fundamental right – the right to control our own bodies, our health and our future. Know this: I will NEVER stop fighting for an abortion accessible to all. #WeWontGoBack

In Thomas’ own words: they will soon target access to contraception, same-sex relationships and same-sex marriage.
Restricting access to abortion is just the start. pic.twitter.com/6Y80B4hxtA

Today’s Supreme Court decision on Roe v. Wade is infuriating. The erasure of 50 years of precedent will have a detrimental impact on many Americans. We must continue to work in Congress to protect the right to abortion. https://t.co/LQaXCC6ug8
