We have a really exciting onsite opportunity for a super talented Design Director to lead the creative team for a fabulous strategic branding agency in Johannesburg. The role operates in the branding (not advertising) space and requires a multi-faceted person who can lead and be hands-on as you will also need to design.

The Design Director will be the manager responsible for the agency’s design team. As Creative Lead, you will lead the conceptual development and delivery of brand design solutions for all agency clients. The role includes managing and mentoring members of the design team.

The Design Director will also need to liaise with external resources such as freelance creatives and other specialists. As a Creative Lead, you will develop and implement clients’ and brands’ strategic brand platforms, being constantly immersed in the strategic and business implications of all creative recommendations made. The successful candidate will have excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as excellent business understanding and awareness. As a creative lead, you will facilitate a constructive working relationship between design, customer service and production. You should also possess an advanced level of understanding of design disciplines and processes, production processes and parameters.

The Design Director will represent the agency in client, management and industry engagements, at interviews, presentations, events and informally in industry-related social circles.

Responsibilities

  • Conceptualize and design graphic and branding materials to a high standard – deliver world-class creative solutions
  • Approach all projects with verve and passion, motivating the team to deliver high quality results
  • Development and implementation of the brand design strategy with the support of a specialist strategist
  • Rental with customer service in estimating time and cost for design projects
  • Work closely with the Client Services team to ensure the creative brief is solid, well thought out and able to provide the design team with a clear and inspiring direction for the work
  • Support the Customer Service team in meeting customer requirements and in selling work, particularly when customer requests are disputed
  • Allocate appropriate schedules and resources for projects, assign tasks, and manage project deadlines and deliverables
  • Motivate, lead and foster the growth and skill development of design team members
  • Build the agency’s network of freelancers with reliable, creative designers and specialized resources
  • Be readily available for face-to-face meetings, brainstorming, approvals or inspections
  • Provide clear and objective critiques of creative work
  • Facilitate and conclude brainstorms
  • Represent and favorably promote the agency in industry and client circles.

Terms
The successful candidate must have/be:

  • Relevant qualification in design or visual communication from a reputable institution
  • 10 years of experience in a design or agency environment
  • Strategically creative and proficient in creating, interpreting and applying world-class design methodologies
  • Displays a passion and enthusiasm for industry and craftsmanship
  • Comfortable and accomplished working with leading brands and delivering results within strict brand guidelines and project parameters
  • Good knowledge of planning and managing the execution of comprehensive design programs, including comprehensive and detailed branding guidelines and specifications
  • Highly developed aesthetic sensitivity and attention to detail, with excellent problem-solving ability
  • Open to new ideas, flexible and resourceful
  • Proactive, motivated and autonomous
  • Ability to multi-task, set priorities and perform well under pressure
  • Ability to articulate clear and logical creative justifications
  • Ability to identify ideas with potential from the first review
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Excellent communication, mentoring, motivation, conflict resolution and leadership skills
  • Highly developed presentation skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Good knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite
  • Advanced understanding of professional print, photography, illustration and typography processes, with a strong ability to lead and quality check their processes.
