Taxi driver charged in Medina robbery

BELIZE CITY, Wed March 16, 2022 – Between 5:00 p.m. on Saturday March 12 and 8:00 a.m. on Monday March 14, a taxi driver who has had previous run-ins with the law allegedly robbed the Medina Jewelry House located on Orange Street in Belize City. He has since been identified as Raymond Montes and has been arrested and charged for the crime, but has since been released on bail.

Ethan Medina, 55, owner of the jewelry store, told police an assortment of items were stolen in the burglary, including a large number of gold earrings and other gold jewelry from a total value of around BZD 20,000.00, a Dell brand laptop worth $1,500.00. , matching silver jewelry and 2 Apple iPhones.

According to Medina, the thieves entered the facility by breaking through an existing wall on the west side of the building, where the office is located.

After a new police investigation, on Tuesday March 15, police formally arrested and charged Raymond Anthony Montes, a 48-year-old taxi driver from Police Street in Belize City, with burglary. Montes is a well-known felon and convicted burglar.

On Wednesday, March 16, Montes appeared before Senior Magistrate Tricia Pitts-Anderson in court and was read for the criminal offense of burglary. Montes was represented by his attorney, Norman Rodriguez, and pleaded not guilty, and since there were no objections to bail, Senior Magistrate Pitts-Anderson granted him $5,000 bond, which he met.
