The Dart: Nursing instructor connects with students – Mississippi’s Best Community Newspaper

NATCHEZ — Lauren Guedon, a teacher at Alcorn State School of Nursing, walked down the hall with a smile on her face at the Natchez campus, near where The Dart landed on Friday. She is in her fifth year of teaching at Alcorn State University School of Nursing.

Originally from Natchez, she moved to Woodville in college and graduated from Wilkinson County Christian Academy before attending the University of Southern Mississippi. Her friend was applying for a nursing school there and she thought she would give it a try.

After graduating, she returned to Natchez to live with her husband in Churchill. He is a fourth generation farmer and owns his own farm supply business. She worked at Merit Health Natchez before teaching at Alcorn. Students are the reason she teaches.

“I appreciate the students. I love connecting with students and breaking things down for them,” Guedon said. “I hope they are empathetic and compassionate. I teach them to have integrity and dedication to the nursing profession. We really need that.

She is still PRN and works at Merit when she is not teaching. Alcorn takes students to the hospital for clinics and she is able to bring her experiences from the bedside to the classroom.

A nurse educator in obstetrics, Guedon is passionate about women’s health and maternal health. She worked in labor and delivery at Merit. In addition, she teaches medical research.

Alcorn State’s Natchez campus serves an underserved population, she said.

“A lot of them are first-generation students. It’s nice to see them having the ‘ah ha’ moment,” Guedon said. “I love teaching. It’s my thing. I love getting to know them why and why they are here. I hope I will help them to be a good nurse.

In his spare time, Guedon enjoys reading. She has three children and keeps very busy with them. The beach is her favorite destination, any beach will do, she says.

Another hobby of hers is arranging flowers for her friends and family.

“I would love to be a florist,” Guedon said. “I like to decorate and make flowers. Someone asked me to decorate for a baby shower, and it worked. I had an older friend who owned a flower shop who taught me what I needed to know.
